Lighting Upgrade:
An East Rand Shopping Centre, Lit Right

Iron Leaf Electric July 2026 4-min read

A shopping centre on the East Rand had been living with the same problem for years: tired, ageing light fittings across the property that no longer did their job properly. Dim shopfronts, patchy parking areas, and back-of-house spaces left almost in the dark — it was a lighting upgrade that was long overdue. We were brought in to rewire and re-equip the centre from the front canopy right through to the delivery bays out back.

Shopfronts that actually feel open for business.

The walkway running past the stores was the first thing customers and staff noticed after dark — and not for the right reasons. Old fittings had dimmed with age, leaving uneven pools of light and shadow along the entire frontage.

New LED canopy fittings were installed the full length of the walkway, giving a clean, consistent wash of light across the shopfronts, signage, and pedestrian bollards. The difference from the pavement is immediate — the centre simply looks open, safe, and cared for.

New floodlights across the parking areas.

The parking areas and the fast-food forecourt on site were running on a handful of weak, failing floodlights — nowhere near enough to light the full extent of the parking surface. Customers were parking in near-darkness at the edges of the lot, which is both a safety concern and simply bad for business after hours.

New high-output LED floodlights were installed across the parking areas and forecourt, replacing the old units pole-for-pole and adding extra coverage where dark spots had been identified. The result is a parking area that is properly, evenly lit from the first bay to the last.

A single well-placed floodlight now covers ground that previously needed several ageing fittings to (barely) manage — a big part of the energy saving on this job.

Delivery bays and service yards don't get to be an afterthought.

Behind every well-lit shopfront is a service yard that customers never see — but staff, delivery drivers, and security do, every single night. On this site, the delivery bays, service alleys, and back-of-house yards had been left with only a single working light in places, or none at all.

These are working areas: forklifts, pallet jacks, trucks reversing in the dark, staff moving stock late at night. Poor lighting back here isn't just inconvenient, it's a genuine safety and security risk. New area lighting was installed along the service alleys and over the delivery entrances so that back-of-house operations can run safely, any time of night.

“A lighting upgrade isn't finished at the shopfront. The yards, the delivery bays, the bit behind the wall — that's where the risk actually lives after dark.”

Closing the loop: the boundary walls and rear gates.

The final piece of the upgrade covered the perimeter itself — the boundary walls, electric fencing, and rear vehicle gates that mark the edge of the property. These areas back onto neighbouring plots and access roads, and a dark perimeter undoes a lot of the benefit of good lighting everywhere else. New fittings were positioned along the rear yard and gate area to keep the full boundary visible and covered.

One site, lit properly, from the front door to the back gate.

This job was never just about swapping a few bulbs. It was a full lighting upgrade across every part of the property that matters after dark — the customer-facing frontage, the parking and forecourt areas, and the back-of-house yards and delivery bays that keep the centre running. Each area had its own requirements, but the goal was the same throughout: no more dark corners, no more guesswork, and a site that is genuinely safer to work in, shop at, and drive through at night.
